The Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks shored up a big part of their secondary for the foreseeable future. Signing safety Earl Thomas to a four year deal, worth $40 million dollars.

Earl Thomas will now be the NFL’s highest paid safety, averaging ten million dollars a year. Before Thomas, the Pittsburgh Steelers Troy Polamalu owned the highest per year average salary of any safety in the NFL, at $9.867 million dollars a year.

The contract for Earl Thomas, included $27.725 million in guaranteed money, only $275 thousand dollars less than safety Jairus Byrd got from the New Orleans Saints.

Thomas finished the 2013 NFL regular season with 105 tackles and five interceptions. Thomas also finished third in voting for the defense player of the year, behind San Francisco 49ers linebacker Navarro Bowman and the winner, Carolina Panthers Luke Kuechly.

Thomas is in the final year of his rookie contract with the Seahawks and will turn 25 in May 7th, one day before the 2014 NFL draft is scheduled to air.
