The weeks prior to week one of the NFL season can be exciting for many. At the same time, during those weeks, players from every team are being informed that they will be released from the team, and will have to look for work elsewhere. Every year there seems to be a few names that people identify that doesn’t make the final cuts.
This year there were a few more than usual. One name that almost everyone identifies is Tim Tebow. The New England Patriots decided to release Tebow and continue to develop Ryan Mallett. It’s tough to say where Tebow is headed next, but the CFL is definitely an option for the young quarterback.
Running back Jonathan Dwyer was among one of those head scratchers when the Pittsburgh Steelers released him. Dwyer was having a good preseason and looked to be a keeper. The Steelers drafted Le’Veon Bell in the 2nd round and acquired Felix Jones from the Philadelphia Eagles. Expect Dwyer to be signed by a running back needy team, such as the St. Louis Rams who don’t have much behind Daryl Richardson.
Vince Young is another name that stands out from the group. Young was recently released by the Green Bay Packers, and is now looking for a job. Young is in a similar situation as Tebow, in that both have been on three different NFL teams in the last three seasons. Like Tebow, Young might have no choice but to consider the CFL, he is no longer viewed as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
Brady Quinn was a former first round pick of the Cleveland Browns, but his play has declined since. Quinn is now viewed as a backup quarterback, most recently for the Seattle Seahawks. However, Quinn was only on the free agent market for a couple of days after being released, and just as quickly, found a job as a backup with the New York Jets.
