NFL Awards 32 Compensatory Draft Choices to 15 Clubs
NFL Compensatory Draft Picks
Monday at the NFL owners meetings a total of 32 compensatory picks in the 2012 NFL Draft were awarded to 15 teams, announced by the NFL.
An NFL team can qualify for a compensatory pick if the team loses more or better compensatory free agent than it acquires in the previous year. Under these rules it makes the team eligible to receive compensatory draft selections.
The amount of picks a team qualifies for, is generated by the net loss of the compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. Compensation picks announced today will supplement the 221 selections in the seven rounds during the 2012 NFL Draft at the end of April.
As a standard, compensatory picks are placed between the third round and the seventh round. How the selections are determined uses a "formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors."
The compensation picks begin at the end of the third round. The only team receiving a third round compensatory draft pick this year, is the Oakland Raiders, who were awarded the (95 pick overall) including two other compensation picks in the next two rounds.
This year only three teams were announced four selections the Browns, Jets and Packers all picked up that total the maximum amounted. Other teams did not suffer a net loss in free agency like Falcons, Bills and Chargers but receive a compensatory pick.
