Outside of Michael Vick and Nick Foles, some may forget that there is a third quarterback on the Philadelphia Eagles roster trying to claim the starting quarterback position. His name is Matt Barkley. Head coach Chip Kelly has made it very clear that there is no clear cut starter for week one. Even though Barkley has been getting third team reps during camp, he does not plan on being a backup in this league.
Barkley’s situation is very similar to that of Russell Wilson last year. There were two quarterbacks ahead of Wilson in the Seattle Seahawks as competition. Wilson was able to pull ahead of the two during preseason, and the same is possible with Barkley.
Barkley admits that he is still learning the new offense and is picking the brains of his teammates, but he is hoping that by the time preseason comes around, he is able to assist teammates that are still having trouble understanding the offense that Kelly has implemented.
