Though the team was considered to be out of the running for Smith’s services just before the start of 2013 NFL Free Agency, things might have changed after the Denver Broncos acquired former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker.
Peyton Manning will now have a deadly trio of targets with Wes Welker, DeMaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, but the addition of Sean Smith and former Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson will turn this rivalry into a must-see battle twice a year.
A big, physical cornerback, Smith looks to line up opposite one of the better CBs in the NFL in Brandon Flowers.
Robinson figures to play in the nickel spot or make the move to safety opposite Eric Berry, who was one of four Chiefs’ defensive players to make the 2013 Pro Bowl. Three of the team’s starting linebackers — Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Justin Hunter also headed to Honolulu.
It’s safe to say that after trading for quarterback Alex Smith and striking inexpensive deals for solid players like DE Mike Devito, TE Anthony Fasano, CB Dunta Robinson, WR Donnie Avery and QB Chase Daniel on the open market Kansas City could be poised for postseason contention and will challenge for the AFC West division title in the upcoming 2013 regular season.
